Simon Smith is a sound artist and technician who specialises in computer and electronics-based composition, installations, and improvised performance. His expertise lies in spatial and immersive performance, and he is currently technician for Birmingham ElectroAcoustic Sound Theatre (BEAST), a large-scale loudspeaker performance system at the University of Birmingham.
Simon’s aesthetic interests encompass dada, surrealism, ugliness, humour, non-standard synthesis, and near-future speculative fiction. His compositions have been performed internationally in Korea, the United States, Norway, and Sweden. He has also released music under the moniker Elective Mute.
His current performance practice centres on wireless technologies and a home built portable immersive sound system. Simon performs regularly as part of Spectral Karaoke, a UK based electronic improvisation event.
